GHJCC Opens the 12th Edition of Its Jewish Book Festival
On the first Tuesday of November, while the last voters pull
the levers signaling a welcome end to campaign rhetoric, Jewish
Book Festival headliner Jonathan Sarna will be at the Greater
Hartford Jewish Community Center discussing his new
comprehensive history of American Judaism. The program is
appropriately called "The Jewish Vote Counts." Dr. Sarna's
scholarly chronicle of 350 years of Jewish settlement in North
America, delivered in sprightly prose is the sort of book that
has made the GHJCC's annual two-week celebration of the newest
literature by, for, and about Jews and Judaism a Fall
classic.
"The festival's focus is Judaism, but its ethical, spiritual,
and historical themes will resonate for everyone," says Book
Festival Chair Pat Kazakoff. "We're presenting a wide range
of subject matter from Sarna's book on American Jewish history
to Michael Sokolove's explosion of the American sports myth
that athletic skill offers a shortcut to happiness and
success. There's something for everyone and just about every
age.
Debutantes
Two first-time authors will present their works at the evening
session. In Tilted Lives psychotherapist Naomi Neuwirth has
collected her poignant short stories about Jewish families and
their struggles to cope with their crises and come to terms
with their lives.
